Spring has Sprung, What are you Drinking?

During the long, cold winter nights we are comforting ourselves with heavy filling meals of braised dishes and stews with big wines as dark as the nights. During the summer we opt for cooling salads and crisp whites to complement our lighter dinner choices. What does spring bring? The brawny reds of winter are too much and it is still a little too brisk in the evening for those lithe whites of the summer. How about some lighter reds that bring to mind the fresh berries we will hopefully be savoring soon.

My evening started with some Barbera d‘Asti from Piedmont. This pretty little grape has thin skins, which leads to very moderate tannins. Its ability to maintain its vibrant acidity helps keeps it refreshing even in warm climates. In Asti it is allowed the best hill-side sites as there is not much of a market for Nebbiolo based wines as there is in Alba with Barolo and Barbaresco. A great introduction to this style of wine making is Cantine Povero Barbera d‘Asti.

BlogThis wine is simply one of the best values in Piedmont. It’s easy to see why Barbera is such a widely loved varietal. No oak here, just gorgeous fruit that works well for a wide variety of occasions. Pairs well with pizza and pasta, but drinks very well on its own. Only 8.99!!!

Piedmont isn’t the only place for Barbera. In fact, before the days of Cab, Barbera was king due to the fact that most wineries were of Italian origins and its ability to make balanced wines even in the heat of the west coast. Barbera is making a comeback today as many wineries look to their roots and realize the potential of this fruit forward beauty. It’s ability to produce full bodied, luscious red fruited wines that pair perfectly with food. Have some great California Barbera tonight from Renwood.

BlogDark plum color, typical Barbera tangy tartness, smooth finish and lots of fresh fruit flavors. Hints of vanilla and caramel complement the fruit aromas and flavors. Great structure, will age nicely. Renwood 2008 Sierra Foothills Barbera Sale 5.99!!!

Barbera is my go-to wine for red sauces. Especially those with a vegetarian bent such as eggplant parmesan or vegetarian lasagna. These are also some great wines for kickin’ back on the porch in some of the great spring weather we have been enjoying. Swing by tonight and give yourself over to Barbera.
